I will admit that most of my interest in A Brush of Darkness was the unicorn living in Abby's underwear drawer. I mean, how can you read that and not be intrigued?! Sadly, little Phineaus, while awesome, was not enough to make me love this one. Abby is a mostly normal woman, working in a bookstore. She's also the Touchstone for her elf princess boss who has been missing for four months. Then an Incubus shows up, demanding answers from Abby about his also missing sister. Then more people start disappearing, so it's up to Abby and Brystion to save them.

A Brush of Darkness did start off good. I really liked Abby. She's not the typical kick-ass heroine. In fact, she really doesn't know much about the supernatural world at all, being new in town and all. It's also extremely draining for her to be a Touchstone, especially when two more supernaturals link with her, because she suffers from seizures. At times I did find her cluelessness a bit annoying, because her not knowing something meant the reader also doesn't get to know it. But luckily there are others around her willing to fill in the gaps so she doesn't get herself killed along the way. This world ended up being really interesting once we learned more about it. It's pretty much got all of the typical supernaturals: demons, angels, shapeshifters, elves, fae, and of course, a unicorn.

While I liked the world and the characters, it was the plot that really got me down. We don't meet Abby's missing boss, Moira, until the end and we don't get to know much about her at all. How am I suppose to care that she's missing? I didn't. Even when the others disappeared, it's not like I had any attachments or interests in them. They were just names on a page at that point. So of course at the end when the villain gives his big speech, I didn't care, because, hey, I don't know you! It was just weird. Although I do have to say that there's some super interesting stuff that I hadn't read before going on near the end. Very cool.

In the end, A Brush of Darkness was okay. If only the plot had actually been focused on Abby, or any character that we actually got to know, it would have been pretty great. There's a lot of fun and unique stuff happening here, so that might be enough to entice to me read the next two books.

A Brush of Darkness Abby Sinclair Book 1 Allison Pang 9781439198322 Books Reviews

I have to admit the cover of this book, and the mention of enchanted iPods, unicorns, and magical marketplaces originally turned me off. Add the incubus, and I was thinking "book porn wrapped up in a ridiculous plot."

I COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG. After having the book appear in my recommendations for a couple of months, I finally decided to try a sample. That first taste piqued my curiosity enough that I went ahead and made the purchase. So very glad I did.

Pang's humor is dry and brilliant. The jaded pervy unicorn might possibly be one of my favorite elements. In addition to her humor, Pang brings some depth and pain to her relationships, though some are much better developed than others. Pang also bravely strays away from stereotypical romance resolutions. This is a breath of fresh air for those of us who read a lot of urban fantasy. For all it's supernatural elements, the primary romance relationship acknowledges it's lack of emotional health and doesn't wrap up with a happily ever after neat and tidy bow. (If you are looking for happily ever afters, you want someone who's not Pang. Try Kresley Cole - you'll love it.)

Pang is not afraid to give her characters significant flaws - physically, mentally, and emotionally. The most refreshing of these are the physical flaws, as the characters have to deal with ugly issues which normally wouldn't find their way anywhere near a book with romantic elements.

Pang's action plot can drag a little bit here and there with a lot of talk about "what do we do next" and maybe not quite enough doing. But these moments are few and far between, detracting little from the overall plot.

Definitely a thumbs-up from me, who was prepared to hate it but ultimately loved it enough to give it 5 stars. Hope the next installment is just as great.
The Story
There is a girl named Abby Sinclair.. during the day she runs a regular used bookstore, at night she manages a magical marketplace. She is a touchstone to a faery princess from the OtherWorld. When people in Abbys world start disappearing the dark myseterious incubus Brystion shows up asking abby for help to find the missing. Off goes the race to save the missing!

Thoughts
This book has an INSANE amount of vivid imagery. Pang truly is a natural story teller. it was hard to put the book down I just wanted to know what was going on! Pang adds in poetry like a master. While once in a while the story got a little consuming because she hints at convoluted things not really being clear, but it just added to the charm of the story. I so badly wanted to figure what where the story was going, it fueled the pace of this book. I can't wait till the next to see where the author takes the characters. She left several story threads to pick up in the next book. This was unique and visually stunning! Great UF book!
